  1. Colloquial (often disparaging) term for an
  2. American. Outside the USA the term is applied
  3. to any American. During the American Civil
  4. War, the term was applied by Southerners to
  5. any Northerner or member of the Union Army
  6. and is still used today to refer to
  7. Northerners. A `real yankee' is a person from
  8. the New England states, especially someone
  9. descended from a colonial founding family.
  10. The word has come to connote craftiness and
  11. business acumen, as in `yankee ingenuity'.
  12.
